Return
Loss in the flood plains

The refugees were often thrown together with military men, both government soldiers and SPLA fighters. Some young women voluntarily married the latter, who then led them away to distant parts of the Southern Sudan where they were sometimes later abandoned with their children. Peke was just one mother mourning the disappearance of her daughter in this way. Here she talks about the day her duaghter Roda disappeared with her Dinka soldier husband, as they were all fleeing Ethiopia in 1991. Still now, some years later, she has heavy sad thoughts about it. She has two other children, both boys, but only had the one girl.
