Yapmaka describes the initial flight up into the Ethiopian mountains, women carrying children in their headbaskets as well as on their backs. The track was winding to and fro, as they gained height and looked down on the tiny figures following. They had to hang on to the clumps of bamboo as they went up (War and Survival, pp. 112-13).
