Working rhythms
Grain can also be pounded, something more characteristic of life in the flood plains than in the hills where stone is common. This scene allows us to see, and hear, the combined effects of various working sounds, as girls and women add the sound of pounding in heavy mortars to that of stone-pocking. They join in the general percussive patterns with a distinct sense of the overall ‘music’ of the whole.
