Athele Dumbale Diviners dance

These clips are from silent Super8 cine film. We have added where we can sound recordings for the music, made around the same time.

There were two separate ‘worlds’ among the Uduk of the 1960s.  First were the outlying hamlets where people lived off their own labours in the fields and forests, enjoyed a wide range of music and dancing - several styles shared with or borrowed from their neighbours - and were happy to patronize the influential networks of healer-diviners, each with its own elaborate rituals marking their special powers.   Meanwhile, around the mission station at Chali, evangelism continued even after the deportation of missionaries in 1964, and activities like football continued along with increasingly popular church teachings.
