Memories of home can take many forms. In Bonga, Sudanese seeds were brought along to plant in Ethiopia; photographs and pictures of all kinds were in circulation, those of lost relatives or the old homeland especially valued. Radio broadcasts about events back home, whether in English or Arabic, could be widely understood. Visitors, such as myself, were often questioned about events and people past and present. Through conversation and story-telling, personal memories became collective ones, and older oral traditions kept vivid.
