Meeting the Top Brass

Martha Naseem Ahmed had been one of the early products of the Chali mission school.  She emerged as a key leader and spokesperson during the long years of displacement and today is a member of the Assembly of the new Blue Nile State in the Sudan. Here in Bonga she is telling us of her trip to the Hilton Hotel in Addis Ababa, as a women’s refugee representative. She met, among others, Kofi Annan, then Secretary General of the UN, who expressed his pleasure at meeting her, and wished her good luck. She also met Ruth Sando Perry (briefly President of Liberia), and Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia’s current head of state, whom she thanked for the hospitality of his country to those who had been running through the bush from Sudan. He welcomed her warmly to the meeting in Addis (War and Survival, pp. 211-12).
