English under the trees
The enthusiasm for education was very strong in Bonga, and in addition to formal schooling already started by the SIM, the Swedish Save the Children, and the Ethiopian government, informal classes sprang up under the trees - known as ‘Undershade Schools’. The teachers were themselves mainly young men who had benefited from schooling in previous Sudanese refugee camps in Ethiopia.
